Want to avoid ZTL fines? A scooter is easier to park and avoids most queues: compare quotes on the scooter rental Ischia page.
ZTL stands for Zona a Traffico Limitato, a limited-traffic zone. Several towns on Ischia close their historic centres and seafronts to non-authorised vehicles, especially in the evenings and in high season. Entry points are monitored by cameras, and fines apply to tourists as well as residents.
How to recognise a ZTL
At each entry point there is a sign with the ZTL symbol and an electronic display. If the display shows that the zone is active (usually a red "ZTL attiva" or "varco attivo"), do not enter. If it shows "non attiva", entry is allowed.
Where the main ZTLs are
- Ischia Porto: the area of Via Roma and Corso Vittoria Colonna, typically from late afternoon to night in summer.
- Ischia Ponte: the historic centre near the Aragonese Castle.
- Forio: the historic centre, closed in the evening.
- Sant'Angelo: entirely pedestrian; park at the top of the village.
Hours and rules change with the season and by town, so always trust the signs on the spot.
Seasonal access for non-resident cars
In summer, non-resident cars brought to the island by ferry may face additional restrictions. This is another reason many visitors rent a vehicle locally.
What happens if you get a fine
The fine is sent to the vehicle owner, which for a rental is the rental company. They pass on your details and usually charge an administration fee. The notice can arrive weeks or months later.
How to avoid fines
- Park outside the centres and walk in.
- Use the large car parks near ports and beaches.
- Ask your hotel whether vehicles are authorised to reach it.
- Consider a scooter, which is easier to park outside the zones (ZTL rules apply to scooters too).
